"La mestra" (La maestra) es un documental sobre la experiencia pedagógica docente de Marifé Arroyo en el pueblo de Barx entre los años 1974 y 1982. El documental explica cómo una joven maestra de veinticuatro años llegó a la escuela del pueblo, en los años del tardofranquismo y la Transición, y puso en marcha un proyecto educativo igualitario, integrador, natural, y en valenciano. Sus maneras de enseñar eran opuestas al que había sido la escuela en el pueblo los anteriores cuarenta años. Barx, en la Safor, era un pueblo de montaña con poco más de 700 habitantes, eminentemente agrícola y rural.
El proyecto educativo de Marifé revolucionó el pueblo y los alumnos. La escuela se abrió a la realidad y a la vida de la comarca y los alumnos, que hasta aquel momento mayoritariamente veían ir a la escuela como un trámite o una imposición. Los alumnos se encontraron de repente con un nuevo mundo a su alcance. El rendimiento escolar, en consecuencia, mejoró drásticamente. Justo es decir que Marifé era castellanohablante, pero quiso aprender la lengua que sus alumnos usaban como normal para darles una educación en su lengua materna.
La experiencia, sin embargo, empezó a tambalear cuando ciertos sectores conservadores del pueblo se posicionaron en contra de los cambios para considerar que la educación que se daba en la escuela era demasiada abierta. La maestra empezó a recibir anónimos y amenazas por enseñar en valenciano. La tensión fue en aumento mientras la sociedad valenciana se adentraba en la Transición política valenciana que añade a las tensiones partidistas el componente de la politización de la lengua.
La polémica estalló definitivamente cuando la prensa conservadora de València se hizo eco de la experiencia de Barx. Una editorial en el diario Las Provincias y varios artículos acusaban a Marifé de “catalanista” “soviética” y prácticamente terrorista hicieron que, de repente, toda la virulencia política de la Transición Valenciana y de la llamada Batalla de València cayeran sobre Marifé y la escuela de Barx.

"La mestra" (The Teacher) is a documentary about the pedagogical teaching experience of Marifé Arroyo in the village of Barx between the years 1974 and 1982. The documentary explains how a young twenty-four-year-old teacher arrived at the village school during the late Francoist period and the Transition, and launched an egalitarian, inclusive, natural, and Valencian-language educational project. Her teaching methods were completely opposite to what the school had been for the previous forty years in the village. Barx, in La Safor, was a mountain village with just over 700 inhabitants, mainly agricultural and rural.
Marifé´s educational project revolutionized the village and its students. The school opened up to the reality and life of the region, and the students, who until then mostly saw going to school as a mere formality or imposition, suddenly found themselves exposed to a new world. As a result, academic performance improved dramatically. It's worth noting that Marifé was a Spanish speaker, but she chose to learn the language her students used as their everyday language in order to provide them with education in their mother tongue.
However, the experience began to waver when certain conservative sectors of the village opposed the changes, considering the education provided at the school to be too open-minded. The teacher started receiving anonymous messages and threats for teaching in Valencian. Tensions escalated as Valencian society was going through the Valencian political Transition, which added to the partisan tensions the element of language politicization.
The controversy erupted definitively when the conservative press in València picked up on the Barx experience. An editorial in the newspaper "Las Provincias" and several articles accused Marifé of being "Catalanist", "Soviet", and practically a terrorist. Suddenly, all the political virulence of the Valencian Transition and the so-called "Battle of València" fell upon Marifé and the school in Barx.
