When in 1936, while still a child, María Casares fled the Spanish Civil War and crossed the Pyrenees on her way to exile, she never imagined that she would become one of the most acclaimed actresses of 20th century French cinema and theatre. This universal Galician, daughter of Santiago Casares, was a muse and friend of Simone de Beauvoir, Sartre, and lover of the Nobel Prize winner Albert Camús.
