Magaluf, Mallorca, una tranquila localidad de costa que se convierte en una de las zonas más saturadas de turistas en verano. ¿Cómo sobreviven sus habitantes a este paraíso turístico low cost?

Magaluf, Mallorca, a peaceful seaside town that turns into one of the most heavily overcrowded
tourist destinations in summer. How do the locals survive in this low-cost tourist paradise?
Strange things happen in the Balearic coast: smell of pee and blood, police cars and ambulances going through the streets without anyone paying attention to it. Shouts in the middle of the night that can be understood as both happiness or suffering. Every year, one million tourists, majority of them brits, crowd the streets of Magaluf during the summer. In an almost ghostlike fashion they invade the public space and transform it to a thematic park where everything is allowed. The small and calm town with a population of 4.500 inhabitants, turns into the Balearic Twin Peaks where residents live in an absurd daily tensionfield between doomful ambience and genuine holiday pleasure. Magaluf turns into a very concrete manifestation of the european low-cost tourist paradigm and life. A tourist paradigm based on nightlife-business and wild, excessive entertainment. The locals try to coexist in the middle of the contradictory tensionfield of this tourist model. A model that feels like an invasion but on the other hand produces millions of euros and jobs in the tourist sector (and therefore enables the locals to live an economically better life.)

Cosas extrañas están ocurriendo en Magaluf: olor a meados y a sangre, coches de policía y ambulancias atraviesan las calles sin que nadie les dé importancia, gritos en mitad de la noche… Magaluf solo es una pequeña y tranquila localidad de la isla de Mallorca que muchos se han aventurado a llamar la Twin Peaks balear. Sus ciudadanos se debaten entre el malditismo cotidiano y el genuino placer vacacional, un lugar que se ha transformado en el paradigma europeo del turismo lowcost basado en el entretenimiento nocturno desenfrenado. Un millón de turistas invaden las calles de Magaluf durante el verano, como si fueran espectros que transforman el espacio público en un parque temático donde casi todo está permitido. Mientras tanto, los habitantes de Magaluf tratan de convivir con las contradicciones de ese modelo turístico que se siente como una invasión pero que también genera millones de euros en el sector de la restauración, puestos de trabajo y oportunidades para muchas personas que no podrían sobrevivir en ningún otro lugar sin las características de Magaluf.
"Magaluf Ghost Town" es un retrato coral de una comunidad durante el fuera de temporada y la temporada alta, desde un tono de misterio, cercano al thriller pero sin perder de vista la comedia costumbrista, mezclando documental y ficción. Se trata de una historia de alcance internacional sobre los sueños de una localidad que solo intenta sobrevivir en un contexto turistificado, y también una reflexión sobre lo que significa ser turista en Europa.
